The only local Fine Fare was in Winsford, which became the current Asda. My first meeting as Clerk to the Council was a Planning Committee in August 1985, at which there were 3 sites under consideration for this exciting new Superstore for Middlewich; Southway, WMC (Lidl) and the football club. As the other two were beyond the desingated retail core of the town, Southway got the nod. It was always Gateway we dealt with in the period up to the opening in 1987. Lots of local people got good jobs there, including a youthful Aidan Devaney in the Butcher's Section. And yes, Tesco began operating from the store at Easter 2009, pending their planning application, which got caught between the termination of Congleton Borough and the emergence of Cheshire East Councils, so again, we got involved to pave the way. Plus ca Change !!

Dave Roberts: Many thanks for that, Jonathan. I would have sworn it was more than three years since Tesco took over that store. Must be because such a lot has happened in that three years.SALT TOWN PRODUCTIONShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08706424934131762804noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2157596724577720469.post-81312750512124398502012-03-09T16:47:51.588+00:002012-03-09T16:47:51.588+00:00I know that Finefare merged with Somerfields somet...I know that Finefare merged with Somerfields sometime in the 90s (after the Gateway name was changed to Somerfields) but I'm talking about he very early days (1988-ish) when Gateway first opened in Middlewich. I don't ever recall Finefare being used as a brand at Middlewich.SALT TOWN PRODUCTIONShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08706424934131762804noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2157596724577720469.post-19973090740458950472012-03-09T14:25:11.612+00:002012-03-09T14:25:11.612+00:00I think Gateway used to be Finefare. I lived in Bristol in the '80s and we have a large Finefare just up the road from me that became a Gateway and then a Somerfield (all being Bristol based companies). I may be wrong though....!Karma Scentshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14838640818359204760noreply@blogger.com
