CANAL SHOP MYSTERY PHOTO

by Dave Roberts

Here's an interesting photo which Middlewich Narrowboats have kindly given permission for us to use here, after posting it on Facebook and asking if anyone could identify the people pictured, and the approximate date.
The location is easy enough to identify and, as Middlewich Narrowboats says, looks very much the same now as it did when the picture was taken.
Its the canal shop at their premises which has, in fact looked like this for many many years.
But what's happening in the photograph, who are the people, and when was it taken?
The girl on the left has rather a look of the early 1970s about her. Does anyone recognise her?
It looks to me as if she's just presented the lady and the gentleman to her left with the things they are holding proudly for the benefit of the camera.
Have they, perhaps, won a raffle or a competition?
The gentleman looks very familiar, and he has the look of a Middlewich man, quite possibly a Middlewich boatman.
I've seen that face before, or one very like it. Does anyone know him?
And what of the lady? Is it his wife? Or is it, as has been suggested, a member of the Cliffe family, who ran the firm before the present owners?
In the background is what looks like a poster of some kind. Can anyone decipher the wording?
I think the first word is 'The', but what's the word underneath? Could it be 'tunnel'?
If you can help with this in any way, don't hesitate to get in touch, either by posting a comment here, or on Facebook.
Alternatively, you can e-mail us on:

middlewichdiary@aol.com

Many thanks once again to Middlewich Narrowboats for permission to use the photo.

Facebook feedback:

Diane Russell: I think the man is Mr Bunn. He was a boater, and his son lived in Rosemount. His daughter-in-law worked at RHM. I think his son was called Bill and the daughter-in-law was Phylis I think. She was quite a tall lady with black hair, and they owned a boat.

Robert Sheckleston: Yes, that is Mr Bunn, His daughter-in-law Phylis worked on the salt floor at RHM

Stephen Dent: It is Fred Bunn that lives up Rosemount. The young lady looks very much like Chris Cliffe's partner but if it is she has never aged as she still looks like this. She is American (or Canadian, I can't remember).

Diane Russell: I think you might be right about him being called Fred, not Bill. The young lady is Brenda Cliffe. The Cliffe's bought the boatyard from Willow Wren Kearns in 1982, so it must have been taken shortly after. I recently talked to Raymond Kearns and he told me that was when they sold it, and that Brenda Cliffe was Canadian. He also confirmed that the Bunn's were a boating family.

Middlewich Music is teaming up with Boatyard Artspace and the Middlewich Creative to bring you a weekend of live music, interactive art workshops and fun for all the family!

Middlewich Music will be hosting the live music stage from 4pm till late on Halloween night itself (Sat 31st Oct), with the Creative bringing art to life through its' workshops throughout the day, as well as a pumpkin carving competition, face painting, a raffle in aid of St Luke's Hospice featuring some amazing prizes and much more!

We'll also be showing LIVE coverage of the Rugby World Cup final, IF England or Wales make it that far*, so while the kids are occupied with the art, the dads will have something to keep them entertained alongside the live music!

As the live music ends around 10pm, if you're still in a partying mood, we'll have a Halloween themed disco to dance the night away to!

On the Sunday, the art workshops take full centre stage as the creative ones amongst you will continue with the work you've started on the Saturday, creating some wonderful hand made masterpieces! There will also be some form of live music (still TBC)!

Fancy dress for the Saturday is OPTIONAL, but massively preferred!

BEST OF ALL, it's all FREE!
(But we will force you to buy raffle tickets! wink emoticon
**This is an event for all the family, but beware, as the night goes on, the music gets louder and the beer will start flowing!**

* UPDATE (4th October) Sadly, we already know that the England team haven't made it to the final (or even the semi-finals). The team 'crashed out' of the tournament on the 3rd October, losing 33-13 to Australia)-Ed

ANNUAL BOAT PULL 2015 (ARCHIVED)

APPEARING ON FRIDAY...

Recent photo.
Fred and Craig will be appearing on Friday at the Boatyard, along with Dave Thompson (guitar), Stephen Dent (percussion) and special guest DAI THOMAS!

(Fred reminded me recently that I came up with the name Moore & Moore Blues - something I'd forgotten about. It's not a perfect name, as we had to drop the 's' to make it work.  Then again, Moores and Moores Blues doesn't work at all! -ed.)

MIDDLEWICH NARROWBOATS' 'OAK' LAUNCHED BY FIONA BRUCE

Frst published 2nd June 2012. Re-published 5th June with an improved definition photo

The canal boat hire industry is alive and well in our town, and Middlewich Narrowboats, the firm which has links back to the halcyon days of canal carrying, as explained here, is under new management and obviously in the hands of people with a lot of enthusiasm for the company and its traditions, as well as for the country's canal network, past and present..
Recently the company launched a new hire boat, named Oak, following the tradition of naming boats after types of tree.
The official launch ceremony was performed by Congleton MP Fiona Bruce who has taken a great interest in Middlewich since her election.
Cliff's photograph shows the assembled company celebrating the birth of Oak.
