MERRY CHRISTMAS!

The (new) Annals Of Middlewich:

2018 - Kerry Katona fails to make an appearance at the Switch-on to plug the Northwich panto she's appearing in. End of civilisation as we know it. Rioting in the streets. Council confirms that, as per their publicity, she wasn't due to switch on the lights (that was the Mayor and the Rose Queen) and wasn't going to be paid (and neither were any of the other guests who appeared).
Keep Middlewich Miserable brigade welcomes two chances of having a good moan: one moan because KK was invited in the  first place, and another moan because she wasn't there..

FAB FESTIVAL 2017: LOST IN THE MIST AT THE NEWTON BREWERY (ARCHIVED)

NEWTON BREWERY ON FACEBOOK

Note: This originally appeared on QSC (and on our sister site The Middlewich Diary) as a straightforward plug for Lost In The Mist's annual appearance at the Middlewich FAB Festival.

What we didn't know at the time was that circumstances would conspire to make this LITM's last appearance at the FAB Festival and one of my last  appearances with the band, instantly turning this poster/flyer into something of a historical document.

I'd been working with Bob Webb, doing 'humorous' poems and the odd song, for around five years when it was decided to form a band, with melodeon maestro Ian Murfitt as the third member.

This band needed a name and Lost In The Mist was thought as good a name as any. The band celebrated its tenth birthday in May 2018.

We had some good times and played some really fab places as well as some really naff ones - the lot of the 'pub band' for ever, of course.

Like any other band, Lost In The Mist's personnel changed over the years, and eventually, in 2017, it was time for another personnel change, when what might be called my 'musical career' came to an end and the sound of LITM was 'refreshed' once more.

No loss at all, of course, to the band. I was never a musician of any sort, and my singing voice was not the best.

But I like to think that, if nothing else, I added a touch of fun and good humour to Lost In The Mist.

I'd hate to be seen as pretentious, but I have to admit that I've always  identified with the words of the immortal Noel Coward:

'I believe that since my life began, the most I've had is just a talent to amuse...'

Better than nothing, though, eh?

Dave Roberts
February 2018

P.S. Current publicity for Lost In The Mist suggests that the line-up changes every two years or so which, apparently, 'keeps our sound and performance fresh and full of life'. Well, thanks a bunch!

THE MIDDLEWICH DIARY FESTIVAL QUIZ 2018 (ARCHIVED)

The competition will consist of five rounds:

1: The Canals of Middlewich.
The Trent & Mersey, the Shropshire Union and the diminutive Wardle Canal. From Rumps Lock to Croxton Aqueduct and from Stanthorne Lock to Brooks Lane Bridge....
what do you know about our town's fascinating network of canals?

2: MUSIC ROUND - The FAB Festival, past & present.
Five questions on this year's artists, and five questions on artists from  festivals past.

3: CALL MY BLUFF.
The ever-popular Call My Bluff in which Mr Roberts gives you three alternative meanings for ten obscure English words. Which is the correct one in each case?

4: DEAD OR ALIVE?
Another old favourite. Ten famous people. Are they still with us, or have they shuffled off this mortal coil?

5: PICTURE ROUND.
Ten pictures of people in the public eye at the moment. Who are  they?

Rules:

1. Teams can consist of as many (or as few) people as you like, but we recommend the traditional quantity of four. £1 entry fee per person.

2: The quizmaster's decision is final, no matter how drunk he gets.

3: No cheating. Or getting found out, at any rate.

4: Bribes enthusiastically accepted.

Question master: Dave Roberts
Quiz Co-ordinator: Peter Cox.

UPDATE: 15th June 2018
A hugely enjoyable evening with no less than SEVEN teams (actually five teams and two individuals) taking part. With the large amount of Thursday evening events going on around the town we had feared the worst, but the quiz turned out to be well worth doing.
Among those present were Cllr Bill Walmsley, the Mayor of Middlewich (who, perhaps a trifle disconcertingly, found himself as one of the answers in the picture round)  and his wife, Cllr Bernice Walmsley.

Many thanks to those who took part, and also to those who donated prizes:

Peter Cox - box of biscuits, bottle of wine,
The Middlewich Diary - box of chocolates, bottle of wine, copy of 'Middlewich 1900-1950' by Allan Earl
Cllr Bernice Walmsley - box of chocolates.
The Boar's Head - bottle of wine.

And thanks to Pauline Harmer who made a donation to bring the funds raised for the Middlewich Appeal up to £70.

Here for the record, are the final scores (Totals are out of a maximum 50 points)

1st: 'Mr and Mrs Macbeth and the three witches' 31 points
2nd: Andy Craig 30 points
3rd: 'Dead' 29 points
4th: 'War Veterans' 26 points
5th: 'No Hopers' 24 points
6th: 'Just me' 23 points
7th: 'Room 101' 18 points

The next Middlewich Diary Quiz will be held at the Boar's Head at Christmas. Date to be confirmed.

THE BATTLE(S) OF MIDDLEWICH (ARCHIVED)

ARCHIVED

Middlewich Town Council
A special commemoration of the Battles of Middlewich which took place during the English Civil War - the first battle on the 13th March 1643 and the second on the 26th December in the same year.

A vivid description of the chaos and confusion brought to the town by the warring factions can be found in Allan Earl's Middlewich 900-1900 (Ravenscroft Publications 1990) (see Page 60 onward)

'Civil war in a small town like Middlewich must have been horrifying to its occupants. The townspeople would have been terrified of the men from both sides of the conflict. They were heavily armed and strangers, who no doubt pillaged to satisfy their greed and took advantage at every opportunity.
It is possible to envisage to some extent the confusion and noise in the narrow streets where the cottages crowded cheek by jowl  in the vicinity of the Church and to imagine the shouts of fear and anger as the smoke of the fire engulfed the houses.
But the reality of a town awakened by Civil War on a March morning in 1642 is probably beyond our comprehension.'

Note that Allan has the year as 1642 rather than 1643. Malcolm Hough tells us that C.F. Lawrence's 1894 History Of Middlewich also gives the year as 1642. It most certainly wasn't 1943! (See below) - Ed

The classic account of the battles of Middlewich is contained in Ormerod's History of the County Palatine (1882).

Editor's Note: Many thanks to Malcolm Hough who pointed out that when this was first published we had the year of the battles down as 1943! As you can see, this has now been corrected....
