As any schoolboy knows, this area has for centuries been famous for its salt industry, and Middlewich still flies the flag with one of the most important salt manufacturing plants in the country.
And the Murgatroyd's brine shaft, its brine pumps and associated infrastructure, are a very special part of the story of Cheshire Salt, with the Murgatroyd's site having the distinction of being the only one of its kind still in existence.
Middlewich Heritage Trust is working hard to preserve it for posterity so that Middlewich can take its rightful place, alongside the Lion Salt Works, as part of the history of Cheshire salt. I wish you all every success with the Brine Pump restoration. To see what can be done, perhaps you could have a look at the Trencherfield Mill Steam Engine restoration in Wigan. I remember seeing it as a gloomy, auxilliary-motor driven thing in the '70's. It's now a state of the art Visitor Centre, with a massive twin cylinder steam engine, churning out 2,300 hp and driving a 26 ft diameter flywheel. It has to be seen to be believed.
